Description
The Palestinian prime minister has offered to step down to clear the way for a new unity government with Hamas, the London-based daily AL HAYAT said June 22. Salam Fayyad told reporters at his West Bank office the day before that he doesn't want to be an obstacle to reconciliation. Fayyad's mainstream Fatah and its Islamist rival Hamas agreed last month to end a four-year rift by forming a joint caretaker government to prepare for new elections. The sides have been unable to agree on a prime minister. Fatah's leader, President Mahmoud Abbas, says he wants Fayyad, a U.S.-educated economist, to stay. Hamas believes Fayyad is allied too closely with the West. Fayyad is widely seen as key to preserving hundreds of millions of dollars in Western aid. His announcement may have been meant to raise pressure to keep him in office. A high-profile meeting between the leaders of Fatah and Hamas was called off, Palestinian officials said June 19, dealing a new setback to efforts by the two sides to end a bitter rift and form a unity government, the Saudi-owned newspaper and others said June 20. The announcement signaled the reconciliation agreement, announced last month at a festive ceremony in Egypt, could face deep trouble in the coming months as the sides try to implement the deal.
