Description
Druze leader Walid Jumblat's proposal for granting Palestinian refugees in Lebanon civil rights has apparently opened a Pandora's box, reviving pre-civil war sectarian passions in a country that is still struggling to recover from the devastating 1975-90 strife. Worse still, the proposal by the influential Jumblat, who is also the leader of the leftist Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) and the Parliamentary Democratic Gathering bloc, has revived deep-rooted Christian fears of plans to resettle the estimated 360,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom live in 12 refugee camps. Right-wing Christian parties, namely the Phalange Party and the Lebanese Forces, staunchly oppose any plan to resettle the Palestinians in Lebanon or to grant them citizenship, fearing that this would upset the country's delicate and sensitive sectarian balance, which is already tilted in favor of the Muslim majority. The idea of accepting Palestinian refugees permanently is unacceptable in Lebanon, according to the 1989 Taif agreement, which ended the 1975-90 civil war and at the time gained rival factions' full support for rejecting any plans to resettle Palestinians permanently in Lebanon.
